Taliban taking back territory as Australian and US forces prepare to leave Afghanistan by September
As foreign forces scale down their presence in Afghanistan, Taliban insurgents have been gaining ground in a string of military advances across the country.
Afghanistan has been a patchwork of various control centres since US-led forces ousted the Taliban from power in 2001 — following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US — and established a new government based in Kabul.
