Domestic violence media coverage protects, excuses perpetrators, Newcastle University researcher says

Vile, harrowing, terrible, horrific — these are the words a seasoned magistrate uses to describe the domestic violence that clogs his courtroom.  

In just one morning in the Warrnambool Magistrates’ Court, south-west of Melbourne, Magistrate Franz Holzer presided over half a dozen cases involving domestic violence.

Only two matters were not related to domestic violence.

“Family violence has been a significant problem over a number of years, and despite the best efforts of successive governments, little has changed,” Magistrate Holzer said during one round of sentencing remarks.
