Women make up just 7 per cent of Australia’s adult prison population, but a 2020 report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that not only do a significant proportion of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds, they have experienced disproportionately high rates of mental health problems, drug and alcohol addiction and homelessness.
