  1. In 27 BC the Roman senate granted extraordinary powers to Octavian which effectively made him the first Roman emperor, thus putting paid to democracy.
    The American senate is finely balanced and so polarised it can easily tip (or flip). Partisan politics have shown scant respect for propriety. The toxic gang-ho mentality of the American libertarians adds fuel to the fire.
    Will American democracy survive? The seeds of autocracy have already being sown in fertile ground and are waiting for the arrival of the autumn rains.
    Does history repeat itself?
