Nearly 40 human rights group send damning letter to Victorian government over Indigenous incarceration

Almost 40 human rights groups and legal bodies have co-signed a letter that damns the Victorian government's bail laws for contributing to Aboriginal deaths in custody.

The letter said  the Victorian government was “hardly a helpless bystander to [this] unexpected tragedy” and “actively and willingly contributes to this ongoing crisis.”

The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) wrote the letter and would send it today to the state’s Attorney General and Minister for Corrections, said VALS chief executive Nerita Waight.
