‘On my birthday I am reborn’: Refugee Farhad Bandesh released after seven years’ detention

Kurdish refugee Farhad Bandesh walked from a Broadmeadows detention centre into bright summer sunshine on Friday, holding his guitar case and shaking with emotion.

After seven and a half years in detention – on Manus Island, in Preston’s Mantra Hotel and finally Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation (MITA) – Mr Bandesh became a free man on his 40th birthday.
