‘He is a hero to me’: Greeks laud forgotten 1920s refugee saviour

Members of the Greek community have raised $100,000 to create a statue of a little-known Victorian who died in 1980, who they consider a hero.

There is already a village in Greece named after the 1920s saviour of refugees, that holds an annual festival in his honour.

And now he will be immortalised with a life-size statue in his hometown of Ballarat.

On Sunday the sculpture, by renowned artist Lis Johnson, will be unveiled in the centre of Ballarat’s main street, Sturt Street, a rare honour among statues of Queen Victoria and King George V….
