Indigenous Australians more likely to be jailed than African Americans

Indigenous Australians are now more likely to be jailed than African Americans, a new analysis of official data shows.

According to the data, a quarter of Indigenous men born in the 1970s have now served time in prison.

Labor frontbencher Andrew Leigh, who crunched the numbers from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, said in a research paper to be published on Monday that Australia’s incarceration rate had spiked by 130 per cent since 1985, despite a fall in crime rates.
