The significance of George Pell’s appeal decision

Wednesday's dismissal of George Pell’s appeal against his conviction for child sex offences was symbolically important.

It sent a crucial message to sexual abuse survivors that their past experiences matter, and that their accounts will be taken seriously by the state, by jurors and by judges.

Hopefully this will encourage more survivors to speak up and take action against those who have wronged them.

It also reiterated an important message to perpetrators of sexual abuse: that no matter who they are, or how much power or authority they hold, they are subject to the dictates of the criminal law.
