All eyes today are firmly focused on what is happening inside the Westminster bubble, but it’s helpful sometimes to zoom out and get a bit of perspective on Britain’s relationship with continental Europe.

Brexit did not emerge out of nowhere: it is the culmination of events that have been under way for decades and have historical roots stretching back well beyond that.
